Biosecurity

Exotic mosquitoes pose a potential risk to public health, the economy and native fauna. They are intercepted at our borders every year, entering the country via a variety of pathways - which must be monitored to prevent them from establishing.

Auckland Regional Public Health Service undertakes a number of activities to ensure that effective bosecurity procedures are implemented to deal with potential threats. This includes the following activities:

  1. Surveillance of international sea (Ports of Auckland) and air ports (Auckland International Airport & Whenuapai Airport
  2. Response to interceptions
  3. Initial response to incursions
  4. Provide sound technical and professional advice on public health issues relating to biosecurity, including work undertaken in relation to:
    • disease vector surveillance and control
    • preparation and testing of contingency plans for emergency response
    • maintaining records and reporting on work undertaken
    • liaison with the Ministry of Health, border agencies, local government and others
    • health education
  5. Participation in national, regional and local emergency arrangements and responses.
